Semeion

Semeion Research Centre is a no-profit Scientific Body, founded in 1985, with legal status acknowledged from University & Research Ministry (MIUR) in 1991, directed by Prof. Paolo Massimo Buscema. In 2005 it became a Special Scientific Institute of University & Research Ministry. In 2006 it was admitted in the list of bodies that can receive 5×1000 fiscal contributions.

Mainly the institutional activity of Semeion is divided in three branches:

–           Basic and experimental research in Artificial Intelligence area, oriented towards discover and experience new mathematical models and algorithms able to emulate particularly complex natural and cognitive processes (the dynamic of several diseases, the criminal networks, etc.).

–           Applied research carried out through the implementation of projects in the medical field (the study of diseases to predict and prevent the development of diseases), in social security (such as identifying the refuge of criminals from the place where they have committed the crimes), in safety environmental (such as the prediction of the dynamics of landslides and the prediction of earthquakes); moreover applied research realized through the realization of projects and products in imaging, economy and finance.

–           Training of young researchers, through courses, seminars and stages, in Artificial Intelligence field with particular attention to new models of Artificial Neural Networks and Evolutionary Algorithms now widely used in the international scientific community.

Semeion Research Centre, as a scientific research body, regularly publishes scientific articles in peer-reviewed international journals (over 300 publications). Furthermore, 24 scientific books it have been published.

In collaboration with private companies, 28 patents has been filed in the most competitive industrial areas (North America, Europe, China, Japan).

During it’s activity Semeion cooperated with national and international bodies and institutions. Besides University and Research, Health (and High Health Institute) Defence, Labour, Ministries and Home Office we report the most significant.

Italian Institutions: The Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Defense and Italian Navy, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of University and Research.

National Research Institutes: National Research Council (CNR), Nuclear Physics National Institute (INFN), National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology INGV, Italian Space Agency (ASI), ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies Energy and Sustainable Economic development), Material Development Centre.

Italian Universities: “Bicocca” University of Milan,  “La Sapienza” University of Rome, “Tor Vergata” University of Rome, University of L’Aquila Department of Civil Engineering, IULM University in Milan, Polytechnic Institute of Milan, Rome Bio-Medic Campus, Pescara University, Alessandria University.

Foreign Universities and Research Centers: University of Colorado – Dept. of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences- at Denver (CO-USA). In 2011, Semeion was one of the founders of the Center for Computational and Mathematical Biology (CCMB) of the University of Colorado. For 6 years the partnership between Semeion and Colorado University, deals with theoretical and applicative aspects of mathematical models with exchange of knowledge and experience.

Ithaca College School of Business NY (USA), Sanders-Brown Centre on Aging, Department of Preventive Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Kentucky; Gutenberg University of Mainz; Department of Radiology, (Deutschland); Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute, Rockville (USA); Prevention Research Center Pacific Institute, (USA); Abo Academy University, Department of Pharmacy (Finland).

Foreign Institutions

New Scotland Yard (GB); Semeion has developed a 3-year intelligence project.

Halland Museum (Sweden), Semeion has developed a collaboration for the analysis of the development of cultural and artistic heritage;

Restrade AB (Sweden), Semeion has developed collaboration for the analysis of cultural, tangible and intangible resources, in various Swedish provinces.

Among the most important companies with which Semeion has collaborated and collaborates we report:  Bracco Pharmaceutical and  Bracco Imaging S.p.A. by Bracco Group, healthcare multinational operating in 100 countries worldwide, Semeion had a scientific cooperation agreement on Artificial Intelligence which lasted 10 years. Important discoveries occurred in medicine field particularly Dementia, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease, in addition, in the following sectors: gastroenterology, cardiology, cardiovascular. In bio-medic imaging sector, throughout patented models that are able to make the hidden information emerge from radiographic images, not visible in the image, but present in the patient, with which the radiologist is helped improving the diagnosis and prognosis quality.
